Based on the French design of the Charleville 1777, the Springfield Model 1816 is a .69 caliber flintlock rifle manufactured in the United States in the 19th century. Produced in nearly 700,000 units, it served for almost 40 years, notably in the wars against Native Americans, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War.

Main features

Caliber: (.69) (round lead bullet weighing approximately (28 g).

Original flint mechanism (several thousand were later converted to percussion).

Range and rate of fire: Limited effective range. Rate of fire of 2 to 3 shots per minute.

Length: 49-inch barrel.

This is the first American musket to have been subcontracted to private manufacturers in addition to the Springfield factory.
