Antique Hollis percussion pistol – Screw-on barrel – .40 caliber

A very fine antique percussion pistol signed Hollis, featuring a screw-on barrel system particularly sought after by collectors. This compact model, typical of mid-19th-century pocket pistols, testifies to the skill of British gunsmiths of the period.

Main features:

• Manufacturer: Hollis (renowned English gunsmith of the 19th century).

The firm of Hollis and Sheath, precursor to Hollis and Sons or Isaac Hollis and Sons, was originally Wallace and Sheath. It became Hollis and Sons in 1861 when Isaac Brentnall Sheath left the firm to immigrate to Canterbury, Australia, where he raised sheep and owned coal mines in what is now a suburb of Melbourne. He had left behind his past as a gunsmith to become an industrialist in Australia. Sheath and Hollis co-founded the firm in 1849, and Sheath remained with it until 1861, as previously mentioned. This firearm therefore dates from between 1849 and 1861.

• Caliber: .40 (approximately 10 mm).

• Octagonal screwed barrel, removable by hand, a rare and highly appreciated feature on this type of pistol.

• Finely engraved percussion plate, floral decoration and scrolls characteristic of English manufacture.

• Checkered wooden handle, arched shape, ensuring a good grip and in very good condition for its age.

• Decorated trigger guard and trigger, with clear engravings.

General condition:

• Sound wood, without apparent structural cracks.

• Clean metal, naturally patinated, with perfectly visible engravings.

• Proof marks and hallmarks clearly present on the barrel.

• Mechanism (hammer, trigger) functional in its movement, tested in firing.

• The screw-on barrel mounts and dismounts correctly.

Historical significance:

Hollis pistols are well known to collectors of 19th-century English firearms, often associated with superior craftsmanship and robust design. The screw-on barrel system further enhances the rarity and appeal of this particular piece.

An elegant, authentic and very well-preserved piece, ideal for an antique arms collection, historical decoration or exhibition.
