Characteristic of the late 18th century, this pocket weapon was intended for the personal protection of travellers and could be easily carried in a carriage, a coat pocket or a travel kit.
Wrought iron fittings and mechanism, short barrel with flats then round, typical of French productions from the Louis XVI period. Characteristics
• Type: Carriage pistol / traveling pistol • Mechanism: Flintlock • Probable origin: France • Period: Late 1770s-1780s • Style: Louis XVI • Barrel: Short smoothbore iron barrel • Stock: Walnut with metal butt cap • Original use: Personal defense and travel
The weapon displays a beautiful patina of age consistent with its condition. The wood is sound and the metal parts retain their original appearance. The mechanism is complete and functional. A collector's item.
Small Louis XVI style travel pistols are sought after for: • their historical character; • their elegant aesthetic typical of the 18th century; • their compact and decorative size; • their interest to collectors of antique French arms.
A rare and unique example in such perfect condition. Fully restored in 2024. The cannon is distinguished by its refinement, typical of pocket weapons used for defense against the 18th-century brigands who were omnipresent on French highways at that time.
Fully functional, although we do not recommend firing an antique weapon that is over 150 years old.
No firearms license is required in Canada.
